Guide to Using Kefir to Treat Candida Yeast

Although using kefir to treat Candida yeast is a solution many people subscribe to, you should be aware that it is not a cure all. If you want to add kefir to your diet, you need to understand what kefir is, how best to add it to your diet and what results you can expect.

Kefir

Originally made in the Caucasus region, kefir is a fermented milk drink. The milk of a goat, sheep or cow is mixed with kefir grains. Kefir milk was prepared by hanging a skin bag near a doorway so that people passing through would knock it regularly and keep the milk and grains mixed together.

Kefir grains are filled with micro-organisms that help balance the body's internal systems. Much like yogurt is used to re-balance your system after a stomach infection, kefir milk is therapeutic. It also contains Vitamin B, minerals and protein. Kefir, like yogurt, can be mixed with fruits, grains and nuts to add flavor and make it more appealing.

Using Kefir

If you are planning to add kefir to your diet, you'll want to begin slowly. Unlike yogurt, kefir is a liquid you drink. You can begin with a 4 ounce glass and if it's not to your taste, you try starting with 2 ounces. Drink the same amount daily for a week in order to let the cultures move through your body easily. After a week, you can increase the amount of kefir you drink every other day in 2 ounce increments.

Along with drinking kefir, your diet should consist of high fiber vegetables, complex carbohydrates and protein. A balanced diet is essential to your success with kefir for treatment of Candida yeast. You'll want to drink plenty of water (at least 8 glasses a day). Fiber intake is important. Kefir produce excess mucus for the colon to get rid of to combat Candida.

Regular Exercise

Regular exercise helps stimulate your intestines and colon to keep them clean. This is important, particularly if you are only planning on using kefir to treat the Candida and not maintain it as a regular portion of your diet.

Medical Advice

Using kefir as a natural remedy can be successful. It can also help keep your body balanced, well nourished and healthy, preventing further Candida yeast infections in the future. It should be noted, however, that kefir is not 100 percent effective and some people may not respond to kefir. You should consult a physician if you suffer from chronic Candida yeast infections or if you have any questions or health concerns related to the infection or using kefir.

Kefir can be purchased at many whole foods stores. You should take note of what kind of milk kefir is made with, particularly if you have food allergies. If you do not know if you are allergic to goat or sheep's milk, then choose cow's milk.
