The Life Alert System: An Overview

Considered a personal emergency response and home medical alert system, First Alert was established in 1987. Serving members throughout the United States, the company has eight offices located in:

  • New York
  • New Jersey
  • Parsippany
  • Tampa
  • Fort Lauderdale
  • Miami
  • Encino
  • El Segundo

The Life Alert System provides monitoring of emergency situations 24-hours a day. For senior citizens, especially those living alone, being a member of Life Alert provides a connection to help with the simple push of a button. Each year, the company handles more than two million calls from people needing some manner of assistance. In 2009, First Alert saved more than 22,000 people from an emergency with a catastrophic outcome, averaging one life every 26 minutes.

The Life Alert System for Senior Citizen Safety

As members of the Life Alert system, many senior citizens are able to live independently in the comfort of their homes feeling safe and secure. On average, according to Life Alert statistics, senior citizens who are members of Life Alert continued to live in their own homes, rather than moving into an assisted living facility or nursing home, six years longer than those seniors that are not members. Life Alert offers two emergency response systems: Life Alert 50+ for people 50-years-old and over, and Life Alert Classic for mature adults.

Life Alert Classic

The original Life Alert monitoring system, Life Alert Classic, provides protection for senior citizens around the clock seven days a week. This system provides protection for:

  • Medical emergencies
  • Fire protection
  • Carbon monoxide gas poisoning protection
  • Protection away from home by supplying a 911 cell phone for emergencies

Medical Emergencies

All too often when a medical emergency or a home accident occurs, senior citizens are unable to get to a telephone to call for assistance and remain helplessly on the floor. However, members of the Life Alert Classic plan wear a waterproof and wireless pendant that connects them with one of the company's response staff with a single push of a button if an emergency should occur. The lightweight pendant, measuring 2-inches by 2-inches, can be worn as a necklace or on your wrist.

As soon as the button is pushed, it activates the home's base unit, immediately opening two-way communication between the member and the response staff at the central monitoring station. The senior is then able to let the operator know the type of emergency situation that exists and proper help is immediately dispatched. Depending on the situation operators notify paramedics, the fire department, the police department, relatives and neighbors as needed. If the person initiating the emergency call does not respond to the operator, authorities are contacted immediately.

Fire Protection

Life Alert monitors smoke alarms in the senior's residence at all times, whether the member is at home or away. If fire or smoke is detected, the company contacts the member and the fire department. In cases where the member does not respond to the dispatcher's contact, emergency personnel are also dispatched.

The company also receives a signal from the smoke detector if the batteries need to be replaced.

Carbon Monoxide Gas Poisoning Protection

Carbon monoxide detectors are located in members' homes and work in a way that is similar to smoke detectors. If a high level of carbon dioxide gas is detected:

  • A signal is immediately sent to the central monitoring station
  • A siren goes off in the member's home
  • Help is immediately sent

911 Cell Phones

A cell phone with one large button is provided to Life Alert Classic members for emergencies that may occur when they are away from home. When the button is pushed 911 is contacted.

Life Alert 50+

The Life Alert 50+ system is designed for people 50-years-old or older. This plan includes all of the aspects of the Life Alert Classic plus a video system that monitors and protects against home invasions.
